Technology Impact on the 21st Century Job Market

Major changes have taken place in the job market over the last few years. There are several factors which play important role in restructuring the world of work: demographic changes, media, technological advances, and economic systems. In this post, we examine technology impact on the 21st century job market and discuss possible solutions which might help future employees to stay fit in the workplace.

Recently, we have seen many technological advances and their impact on the economies, and demographics of the society. Job market absorbs all the changes caused by the technology intervention and presents a new set of requirements to the potential job seekers.

Automation is reaching non-routine jobs

When we mention automation, the first thing that comes to our mind is the substitution of humans by machines in routine operations: manufacturing lines and procedural re-occurring tasks. This has changed recently, and automation is expanding to non-routine tasks.

With the development of Artificial Intelligence solutions, several sectors such as banking, customer services, and even counseling services can be taken over by machines. It is predicted that artificial intelligence can do equal or better work than humans in such area as retail sales, border patrol, and law.

Many are worried about jobs which will be left for humans. Will we have enough jobs for a new generation of employees? What needs to be done to secure these jobs?

Actually, automation does not cause higher unemployment rates. As machines take over simple and routine tasks, employers expect more complex and creative performance from their employees. Reports suggest that employees of the 21st century should demonstrate collaboration activities, abstract and systems thinking, complex communication, negotiations, and the ability to successfully perform in diverse environments.

Technology expands working environment

New technological solutions help to control workers performance from several perspectives.

Technology allows working remotely having flexible working schedules. Time and space issue is not critical anymore. Many companies allow workers to set their own schedule, focusing on the results of the performance.

Social media is spreading its impact on the workplace and the job market in general.

Social media is considered as a valuable tool for:

  • Finding a job;
  • Finding a candidate to fill in the vacancy;
  • Monitoring work output;
  • Performing some job-related tasks.

Meanwhile, we have to take into account several concerns related to social media use:

  • the protection of the employees’ privacy;
  • the protection of the employer’s reputation; and
  • keeping trade secrets.

Millennials are entering the job market

Another factor which re-enforces the use of technology is the Millennial generation which is entering job marker staring as from now. According to the reports, in 2020, over 36% of the workforce will consist of Millennials, and it means that the workplace is facing the collision of generations, and at the same time, it will develop a more diverse structure of the workforce.

Millennials differ from the previous generations:

  • they look further than just a job stability and employment benefits;
  • they need to have a strong sense of their part in the strategical development and planning;
  • they prefer to see the ‘bigger picture’.

Currently, most of the companies are failing to satisfy the needs of Millennials. If companies struggle to develop a learning culture and to provide the mentoring and training for Millennials, this can lead to problems with the future growth and development.

To gain benefits from the potential of the Millennial workforce, companies need to incorporate tools and technologies to enable their productivity.

The engagement of employees should start with maintaining personal communication with them by using internal social platforms. Millennials’ approach working and personal life combines convenience, connectivity, and functionality – they prefer to learn and work online.

And the starting point is to provide access to the systems where Millennials can receive the training and mentoring. To help employees to succeed in the workplace, training content must focus on developing of technological and interpersonal skills.

Education and training must prepare individuals to meet changes in the job market

Technology requires regular skill upgrades to match the workplace requirements.

Education and training sectors must take care of preparing individuals for new jobs by using technology which makes education and training available and accessible for every person anywhere at any time.

Since employees are expected to learn continuously, and it is expected that education must prepare people to become lifelong learners. Effective learning will not be possible without the transformation and diversification of online learning and training. Education and training systems must be adapted to deliver more flexible, open, adaptable, resilient, certifiable, and useful lifelong learning

Several important solutions need to be made regarding alternative credential. Mechanisms should be developed and implemented to allow learners to get formal benefits from the self-learning efforts.

Employers are looking for people with communication, leadership, conflict resolution, and motivation skills. Innovative thinking and practical skills in 3D modeling, 3D printing, Virtual reality, and data analysis are in high demand.

Another aspect of learning is about intangible skills and attributes such as emotional intelligence, curiosity, adaptability, and critical thinking. These skills and attributes needed to succeed in the modern world, and they can’t be taught to robots and machines.

Conclusion

Learning is a compulsory requirement for employees to stay fit and efficient in the workplace. Technology impact on the job market through its intervention to different industries and businesses needs to be addressed by education and training sectors. Technology becomes more advanced every day. One can’t help but to wonder if certain jobs in the future might be taken over by it.
    We also have to remember that our jobs also require human contact, human behavior, human thoughts and human competitiveness etc.
    We need to embrace the idea of a technical society and use it to our advantage, which will help with our success.

    1. Thank you for your valuable input. Yes, technology is advancing, and it affects all areas of our lives. Technology is taking many jobs, but they’re much more new positions coming up. 2. Great post Nadja!
    My daughter opted to skip post-secondary education in favor of just working full-time.
    I encourage her to continue to think on what she really wants to do in order to feel content and not to just have a career for the sake of having a career.
    It is hard to keep up with how quickly things are moving in the world when post-secondary institutions are so slow to keep up.
    Thank you for this information!

    1. You are very right. The educational systems in most of the countries are not adopting new approaches to teaching and learning. It is a crisis. But it can’t continue forever. The approach to education should change dramatically. I am teaching currently, and I see that students want to have different content, the different method of delivery, and different communication. I am trying to implement some unusual approaches but I am also limited by rules and regulations.
